In collaboration with the Interreg-project “Lichtbild/Argento vivo” the City Museum of Bruneck presents an exhibition with historical photographs from the second half of the 19th century to the period between the two World Wars, which illustrate the female world of work.

The shots in the exhibition document the economic transformation of the territory through the subtle or evident change in the employment activities undertaken by women, from agriculture to mechanisation and the tertiary sector. To this end, one nucleus of the photographs is exemplary, depicting laundry work as it transforms from a domestic task into paid employment. The images also testify to the way in which times of war contributed to the women entering the workforce, making up for the absence of men in the family activities, taking on decisive roles such as in the case of nurses during World War One, and being employed in sectors that were previously the prerogative of men, such as on the railways during the World War Two.

The series of exhibition “Women in photography” display treasures from numerous photographic archives in Tyrol, Alto Adige and Trentino and shows in the other locations the following focuses: Course of Life (Lienz), Atelier (Bozen/Bolzano), Women photographers (Innsbruck) and Lifestyles (Trento).
